André Artigue (1879-1956), Chalets Under Snow In The Chartreuse, Mixed Media On Paper

Artist: André Artigue (1879-1956)

Mountain landscape under snow in the Chartreuse, by André Artigue (1879-1956).
Mixed media on tinted paper, graphite with colour highlights, signed lower left and inscribed on the reverse « En Chartreuse, André Artigue ».

A few chalets with buried roofs emerge from a thick blanket of snow, set against a curtain of fir trees shrouded in mist; in the upper part, a veiled sun tints the sky with a barely perceptible orange glow. The reliefs and conifers are built up with a dense network of vertical hatching, while the snow is rendered by broad light areas left almost bare.

Born in Paris in 1879 to Savoyard parents, André Artigue received his first drawing lessons from his father, himself a teacher. Music won out at first: a baritone encouraged by the singer Nellie Melba, he set his sights on the opéra-comique and performed as a soloist at the Schola Cantorum. Drawing never left him, however; he studied under Gustave Moreau at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, then exhibited in Paris and in North America. In 1919 he left the capital to travel through Brittany, Provence and other provinces, before settling in Chambéry in 1921. From then on he reserved his submissions for regional salons, where he met with success. Influenced by Japanese art, he stands out for his landscapes with hushed atmospheres and buried villages, where the trees bend under the weight of the snow — the vein to which this drawing belongs.

Presented under glass in a frame with a wide grey-green painted flat, edged with a gilt moulding with fillets. Wear and flaking to the paint of the flat revealing the gesso in places, a slightly opened mitre, a few small knocks to the moulding touched up with gilding. These alterations relate to the wear of the frame and do not affect the reading of the work.

Hangs horizontally; an ideal subject for a mountain interior.
