Small Wellington chest in strongly figured walnut veneer, English work of the Victorian period, mid-19th century, circa 1840-1860.

A fine English Wellington chest, circa 1840-1860, in the manner of Gillows, in figured walnut veneer, appealing for the quality of its grain, the rarity of its small size and the survival of its ingenious side-locking mechanism.

The front opens with seven drawers of graduated sizes, fitted with their turned wooden knobs. The drawers are flanked by a hinged side pilaster fitted with a brass lock, which secures all the drawers at once, on the Wellington chest principle. The mechanism is still in working order; however, as the key is missing, it cannot be locked.

Strongly figured walnut veneer on the front and sides. Rectangular top, plinth base. A handsome decorative presence for this small model, with the narrow, upright proportions typical of this type of 19th-century English furniture.

Very good overall condition. Signs of use and visible fine scratches. Key missing. Old chalk marks on the back, possibly an old inventory or sale number.
