Charles Cuzin, Winter Landscape With A Bridge, Signed Oil On Hardboard, France
Artist: Charles Cuzin (1907-1975)
Charles Cuzin, Savoyard painter — winter landscape with a bridge and a cottage under snow, signed oil on hardboard, in its frame, 20th century
Small winter landscape, oil on panel, signed lower left « charles Cuzin ». 20th century. Charles Cuzin, born in 1907 in Croissy-sur-Seine, trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris after an apprenticeship in picture framing, settled in 1936 in Aix-les-Bains, on the shores of Lac du Bourget. A framer and painting restorer — he notably worked on the decorations of the Chambéry theatre —, a teacher at the Aix-les-Bains college in 1949-1950, the author of frescoes in the chapel of Myans, and occasionally a decorator of jewellery and ceramics. Close to the painter and sculptor Cyril Constantin, whose studio on the rue de France, known as l'Antre, brought together the artists of Aix and gave rise to group exhibitions in Aix-les-Bains and in Lyon.
A work characteristic of his manner: small format, snow landscape, a cool palette tuned to greys, blues and whites, dark trees silhouetted against the light to create depth.
Painted in oil with the brush on hardboard. Clearly visible impasto in the snow and the clouds, lively and spirited brushwork. On the reverse, a handwritten pencil inscription, now barely legible.
In the foreground, a still river, with brown, ochre and white reflections running across its surface. Banks edged with snowdrifts, a humpback bridge spanning the stream, a low house with a heavily snow-laden roof, flanked by red bushes and clumps of bare trees. A wide-open sky, slate grey swept with streaks of pale yellow.
Presented in a composite frame of moulded wood: an outer ogee moulding patinated dark green and highlighted with gold, a gilt inner fillet, a slip covered in beige paper and a brass fillet against the sight edge.
Very good overall condition. Stable paint layer, with no losses or lifting.
