Louis Dubois (1830-1880)
Oil on canvas.
Dimensions of the work: 40 x 60 cm.
Dimensions with frame: 60 x 80 cm.
DUBOIS, Louis. Brussels, 1830 - Schaerbeek (Brussels), 1880.
Painter of landscapes, allegories, figures, and still lifes. He frequented the Saint-Luc Free Studio. From 1848 to 1851, he studied at the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts (Navez's studio). He also frequented T. Couture's studio in Paris. From 1868, he founded and led the Free Society of Fine Arts in Brussels, in reaction against official painting. A spokesperson for realism in Belgium, under the pseudonym "Hout," he became Courbet's champion in "L'Art Libre" (Free Art). A colorist by temperament, his commitment to the quality of his craft is evident in a highly diverse body of pictorial work encompassing landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and genre scenes. At times, the transposition of an atmosphere of mystery foreshadows a form of symbolism ("The Storks," 1858, Brussels, Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium). (Dictionary of Belgian Painters)
