Curule Chair, X-frame Chair, William & Mary Chair And Its Footstool, England 17th Century

Curule Armchair, X-Frame Chair, William & Mary Chair and Matching Footstool in Lacquered Beech
England, late 17th century, upholstered in cut velvet

A set of seating furniture comprising an X-frame armchair and its matching rectangular footstool. English work, late 17th century. An architecturally structured form derived from the antique curule seat (sella curulis), a symbol of power and authority.

The frame is most likely made of beechwood, covered with a thick original finish, varnished or lacquered in dark brown japanning, imitating precious woods. Uprights, armrests, and legs with sinuous, moulded profiles. Legs joined by baluster-turned stretchers. The painted surface shows pronounced wear, craquelure, and flaking, attesting to the age of the piece.

Traditional upholstery mounted on cross-webbing, clearly visible on the underside of the seats. Covered in rich cut velvet with a floral and foliate damask-style pattern, in carmine tones on an antique gold-green ground. The edges are finished with wide red fringe trim and secured with upholstery nails.

The seat bases of both the armchair and the stool are fitted with central panels of plain red fabric, designed to receive loose removable cushions upholstered in the same cut velvet. The wooden structure is in exceptional condition, with frames that are perfectly stable, solid, and suitable for everyday use. The textile shows normal wear consistent with use, a time-worn patina, and slight scattered fraying.

Provenance: Private collection of a British family established in France.
