Authentic Victorian Mahogany Pedestal Desk, England, 19th Century

Authentic and elegant English Victorian pedestal desk (second half of the 19th century), of fine craftsmanship and with an impressive presence. Distinguished by the harmony of its proportions, the richness of its figured mahogany veneer, and the restraint of its design, this desk has a strong and refined character.

Constructed in solid wood with figured mahogany veneer; the drawers and top are in solid mahogany. The writing surface is fitted with an old red leather inset, now attractively patinated, decorated with a gilt-tooled border.

Opening with nine drawers: three frieze drawers and three drawers in each pedestal, all fitted with escutcheons and brass ring handles. The handles are old replacements; traces of the original fittings remain visible inside the drawers.

The lock of the central frieze drawer bears the mark “Chubb's Patent, London, Maker to Her Majesty”, together with the number 719068. The other locks are in working order and operate with a single key; only the central drawer lock is not functioning. The desk stands on eight bronze casters stamped “Clarke Loach Patent”, all in good working order. The casters can be removed on request.

The two pedestals stand on moulded plinth bases. In keeping with the English tradition, the desk breaks down into three parts (top, left pedestal, right pedestal).

Condition: Good overall condition, consistent with age and use. Minor veneer losses and light wear, in keeping with age. On the right pedestal, slight old swelling of the horizontal rails has caused small localized veneer cracks. Shrinkage splits inside the pedestals, not visible in normal use. The back shows a slightly uneven patina due to past exposure to sunlight. The desk has been checked by a cabinetmaker, treated against wood-boring insects, and is ready to be installed.
