Credenza, Cabinet In Carved Walnut, 17th Century, Henri IV Period - France Late Renaissance
Credenza, prestige furniture piece — Carved walnut cabinet from the 17th century — Late Renaissance, Henri IV period
Remarkable two-tier credenza, a prestige piece in carved walnut, embodying the classical ideal and architectural elegance of early 17th-century France. Classically inspired composition drawing from the repertoire of Roman Antiquity: fluted pilasters with Ionic capitals, rigorous vertical geometry, and noble proportions. An ensemble of great refinement.
Upper section, period piece (17th century): opening via a central door with a deeply projecting panel, enlivened by successive mouldings framing a vertical recessed rectangle. The façade is punctuated by four fluted pilasters crowned with carved Ionic capitals. Overhanging cornice with layered mouldings. An ensemble of refined and assertive vertical geometry, characteristic of the Henri IV / Louis XIII repertoire.
Wide drawer bordered by multiple mouldings, providing the transition between the two levels. Lower section added in the 19th century: set back to form a display niche. Resting on six feet: four front feet turned in a flattened ball shape, two plain rear feet.
Entirely in solid walnut, displaying a beautiful golden patina acquired through use and the passage of time.
Functionality: door and drawer in very good working order. Lock and key present but not original; the original system was likely fitted with a mechanism locking both door and drawer simultaneously — a traditional feature of credenzas designed for safeguarding foodstuffs.
Function and history: the credenza, a piece of furniture whose very name derives from trust (credere, "to believe/trust"), was used for the secure display of dishes and ceremonial tableware in aristocratic residences of the Grand Siècle. The upper cornice served as a dresser or display shelf, while the lower compartment locked with a key to protect contents from theft or tampering.
Provenance: French private collection. An old label on the reverse mentions the Garde-Meuble du Colisée, attesting to a history within the Parisian antiques trade.
Condition: Good overall condition; a functional piece of furniture ready to take its place in an interior. Treated against wood-boring insects and inspected by a cabinet-maker. Traces of past restorations and successive interventions, consistent with its age. Lower section and feet added in the 19th century. Signs of wear from use, natural wood cracks, authentic patina preserved.
