Large Art Nouveau Mirror (2 Meters) In Mahogany Carved In High Relief With Iris Decoration, Circa 1900
Large Art Nouveau Mirror in Carved Mahogany with High-Relief Iris Decoration, France circa 1900
Important architectural-format Art Nouveau wall mirror, reaching 2 metres in height, made of richly carved mahogany with a naturalistic iris decoration, the iris being an emblematic flower of the Art Nouveau aesthetic.
The composition, sinuous vegetal lines, and powerful high-relief carving connect this piece to the taste of the Belle Époque and to the spirit of the École de Nancy, in the wake of creations by Gallé and Majorelle.
The stippled backgrounds, known as amatis, inspired by bronze-chasing techniques, emphasize the finesse of the execution and enhance the play of shadow and depth.
A strong, authentic decorative piece, rare both for its size and for the quality of its carving.
Naturalistic ornamentation typical of the Art Nouveau repertoire. Abundant vegetal decoration composed of iris flowers, buds, slender foliage, and sinuous stems running around the entire perimeter.
Highly accomplished carving technique, executed in strong high relief. Presence of openwork sections and sculpted elements in the round, creating significant depth effects. Deliberate contrast of textures between the smooth, polished floral motifs and the stippled recessed backgrounds known as amatis, a treatment inspired by the chasing techniques used in bronze work.
Original antique mirror plate, with a border enhanced by a wide bevel following the inner profile of the frame.
The back is structured with heavy traditional parquetry made of softwood planks.
Very good overall state of preservation. A few very slight small losses in the lower right section, as well as one loss on a carved stem located on the right side. These imperfections remain very discreet and visually blend into the whole, the wood showing a homogeneous tone both on the surface and throughout its thickness. They are therefore barely noticeable to the naked eye. Please refer to the last two photographs.
The mirror plate is sound, showing only minimal signs of use in the form of very fine scratches. Additional photographs of these micro-scratches can be provided upon request.
