Large 17th-century English Chest In Solid Carved Oak With Rosettes, Jacobean Style
Large English 17th-century chest in solid oak, carved with rosettes and lozenges in the Jacobean style, 17th century, Stuart period.
A rectangular storage chest with a flat lid. English work of original manufacture. Dating from the 17th century, Stuart period, circa 1620–1680. A piece in the Jacobean style, highly representative of English cabinetmaking of the period. Historically intended for the storage of household linen.
Built with great sturdiness entirely in solid oak. Traditional construction with mortise-and-tenon joints and visible wooden pegs. Straight base formed by the direct continuation of the outer structural uprights. Lid made from wide fitted planks. Flat back with three plain joined panels.
The front is architecturally designed and divided into four raised panels. Richly carved decoration in both recessed and relief work. The main ornamentation consists of circular motifs framing central lozenges. The upper rail is embellished with a continuous frieze of half-rosettes and stylized floral motifs. The front stiles and intermediate uprights are decorated with friezes of scale-like or notched chevron motifs.
The interior layout includes a large storage compartment and a small compartment on the left side (traditionally called a candle box), closed by a drop lid mounted on wooden pivots. Wrought iron hardware. Three long strap hinges fixed beneath the lid and to the rear rail. Keyhole on the front and internal locking mechanism present. Key missing; locking system not in working order.
Very good overall condition considering its age. Sound and very sturdy structure, capable of supporting the weight of someone sitting on it. Beautiful dark, glossy oak patina. Signs of use, age-related wear, and natural splits in the wood. Loss of material visible on the edge of the upper rear rail, indicating old wear or possible woodworm damage. Functional restoration noted: the lower part of one rear foot has been reinforced with the addition of a shaped wooden support, a modification that does not affect the stability of the piece or the appearance of the front.
