Monumental Bronze Vestibule Lantern In The Louis XVI Style - France 19th Century, Napoleon III

Cylindrical model in finely chased bronze. French work from the 19th century, Napoleon III period (circa 1860–1880), featuring a richly chased mount decorated with passementerie, pearls, ribbons, bows, acanthus leaves and pine cones. It retains its original glass panels and displays a beautiful gunmetal patina with warm golden-brown highlights. Measuring 110 cm in height, it belongs to the category of large antique lighting fixtures for châteaux or private mansions.

An antique light fixture originally designed for gas lighting, later converted to electricity during the 20th century. The central cylindrical stem, a remnant of the original gas supply pipe, has been skilfully reused to accommodate the electrical wiring. The upper mount consists of four curved console arms joining the cylindrical body, topped by a crown of acanthus leaves concealing the suspension ring.

Rich neoclassical ornamentation executed in the round and in high relief. The decoration imitates elements of passementerie, characterized by draped cords holding tassels and pompoms. It also features ribbon bows, beaded friezes around the upper and lower bands, and acanthus leaves. The tops and bases of the uprights are punctuated by finials and spinning-top ornaments in the form of pine cones.

The bronze structure is of remarkable quality of execution. The original patina, with gunmetal, golden-brown and coppery tones, enhances the depth of the chasing. The lantern is fitted with four large curved glass panels around the circumference and a circular flat glass panel forming the base. Access to the lighting compartment is through a curved side door secured by a functional mechanical latch. The central lighting system has four upward-facing lights fitted with standard bayonet sockets (B22).

Very good condition for a piece of this scale. A few minor losses to the circular beaded friezes, visible in the photographs. A stabilized hairline crack is present on the lower corner of one of the curved glass panels, barely visible when installed. Discreet residual traces of old paint. Older but functional electrification.
