18th Century English Gateleg Drop-leaf Dining Table In Solid Oak

18th-Century Solid Oak Gateleg Drop-Leaf Dining Table

Freestanding double drop-leaf table, known as a "Gateleg" model. Oval top, nearly circular in proportion when fully extended. It can easily transition into a console or wall-facing serving table when both leaves are dropped down alongside the base.

Rustic cabinetmaking of English origin, dating from the 18th century.

Materials & Top: Crafted entirely from solid oak. The top is composed of wide, joined boards featuring a quarter-sawn cut, highly characterized by prominent medullary rays (often referred to as tiger oak figuring). Traditional mortise and tenon construction with exposed wooden pegs.

Base & Mechanism: The base is composed of baluster-turned legs, detailed with ring and ball turnings. Four fixed legs form the main structure, secured by a rectangular-section perimeter stretcher. Two hinged, swinging "gate" legs swing out to support the drop leaves. The frieze/apron features an architectural scalloped profile at both ends.

Satisfactory state of preservation. It is a heavy, stable piece with a sound structure. The opening and closing mechanism of the leaves is smooth and functional. There are traces of customary historical restorations visible on the underside, including the addition of reinforcing blocks and the later replacement of the metal hinges. Wear consistent with age, an antique patina, minor edge chipping, and slight natural shrinkage cracks inherent to the age of the wood.

Measurements:
• Total length (fully open): 175 cm
• Total width (fully open): 148 cm
• Height: 74 cm
 • Depth (closed, as a console/side table): 55 cm
