Queen Anne Lowboy Side Table In Quarter-sawn Oak, England, 18th Century

Queen Anne lowboy side table in quarter-sawn oak, England, 18th century

A side table that can also serve as a small desk. Provincial workmanship in the Queen Anne style. The structure is made entirely of solid oak. The wood is quarter-sawn, making the medullary rays highly visible, particularly on the top and the drawer front.
Period: late 18th / early 19th century.

Rectangular overhanging top with straight edges. The apron opens with a single drawer spanning the full width. The lower rail on the front and sides is cut and deeply shaped.

Traditional frame construction with mortise-and-tenon joints. Visible protruding wooden pegs on the uprights. Drawer assembled with hand-cut, irregular dovetails.

Embossed brass hardware decoration. Fittings include two drop handles on shaped backplates and a matching central faux keyhole escutcheon. No locking mechanism or key.

The base consists of four curved corner legs. The feet end in rounded pad feet, a characteristic typology known as “pad feet.”

Overall in good condition. Signs of use, age-related wear, light scratches, and superficial surface marks consistent with age on the top. Natural oxidation of the secondary woods. Minor oak splits. A slight loss of metal is noted on the right end of the brass backplate of the left handle. Deep, old waxed patina.
