A superb quality 17th-century joined oak coffer from Lancashire, circa 1678, displaying wonderful upright proportions and a beautifully untouched patina. The coffer retains its original hinged lid with large iron strap hinges, above a finely worked four-panel front. Each panel is carved with a petal flowerhead roundel, while the top rail is decorated with a guilloche border enclosing various flowerheads, and bears the inscription “IMS 1678”. The whole stands on slender, run-moulded extended stile supports, integral to the construction. In completely honest, unrestored condition, this is an excellent early example of English country furniture, traditionally used for storing bedding, linens or valuables. Constructed from solid oak planks with pegged joints, it remains strong and practical, raised on its original stile feet.Large and impressive, with a rich, deep color and superb surface, this 17th-century oak coffer is both highly decorative and functional. It would make a striking focal point in a hallway, living room or at the foot of a bed, and is a lovely, authentic piece for collectors of early oak and period country furniture.
