Georges Cappelli (1934–2015) - Watercolor, Haute-savoie, Village Under The Snow, Chamonix

Artist: Georges Cappelli (1934-2015)

Georges Cappelli Watercolor – Le Tour, Haute-Savoie France – Snow-Covered Village Painting, Chamonix, Mountain Landscape

Watercolor on paper by **Georges Cappelli (1934–2015)**, signed "G. Cappelli" and dated in the lower right corner, with the location inscribed in pencil at the lower left: "Le Tour (Hte Savoie)". Framed under glass in a gilt frame.

A painter from the Savoie region, Cappelli devoted his work to the landscapes of his native area — villages, country roads, the mountains of the Bauges massif, and winter snow scenes — using a soft palette of blues, greys, and greens. He is best known for his oil paintings on canvas and board, which regularly appear at auction, with estimates typically ranging from €400 to €600 for medium-sized Savoyard landscapes. His works on paper are less commonly encountered.

The subject: Le Tour, the highest hamlet in the Chamonix Valley, at the foot of the Col de Balme, blanketed in deep snow. Chalets with heavily snow-laden roofs, dark wooden walls barely emerging from the snow, chimneys capped in white, a solitary fir tree on the right, a few stacks of firewood in the foreground, and the mountainside rising behind to enclose the composition. A cleared road winds towards the far end of the valley.

The watercolor technique is perfectly suited to the subject: transparent blue-grey washes evoke the mountain and its cast shadows, untouched areas of white paper convey the snow, and touches of purplish brown define the timber and architectural openings. Fine-grained watercolor paper, with its edges left visible beneath the mount.

Carefully executed modern framing: a moulded gilt frame with black trim, complemented by a taupe-grey mount with an octagonal opening. The cut corners give the artwork an unexpected presentation, setting it apart from the conventional rectangular mount. Glass intact, fibreboard backing, hanging fittings attached to the reverse — ready to hang.

Landscape format, suitable for displaying on a shelf or hanging on a wall, either on its own or as part of a collection of mountain watercolors. An ideal piece for an Alpine chalet, a holiday home in Savoie, a hallway, or an office — anywhere that could benefit from a little mountain stillness and the crisp atmosphere of winter.

Condition: The watercolor remains fresh, with well-preserved colors and clean paper, showing no visible foxing or light damage. Slight rippling of the paper along the upper section, typical of a watercolor secured at a few points, and a small area of more concentrated pigment in the snow at the lower left. Frame and glass in good condition, with minor signs of use. No restoration or intervention required; the piece is ready to display as it is.
