Chinese Peking rug, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, Northern China, circa 1900–1930, in the tradition of the Ningxia, Baotou and Suiyuan workshops. A deep indigo-blue field features ten ivory floral-shaped medallions enclosing Hundred Antiques motifs, arranged around a stepped central medallion. This balance of ornament and open space, characteristic of Chinese taste, gives the piece a visual clarity prized by interior designers, allowing it to complement both classical and contemporary interiors. Dense knotting, approximately twelve to sixteen knots per square centimetre, and supple, gently lustrous wool retain a pleasing feel underfoot. The rug shows no signs of restoration or repair, an uncommon feature in pieces of this kind. Its compact size makes it easy to place and ship: it may be laid at the foot of a bed, in an entrance hall or corridor, draped over a sofa, or displayed as a wall hanging.

Indigo-blue field scattered with ten floral-shaped medallions, each enclosing a Hundred Antiques motif — books, scrolls, a vase, an incense burner, a fan, scholars’ objects, and emblems of longevity and happiness — accompanied by a diamond-shaped panel with blue decoration. At the centre, a cruciform cartouche medallion with an ivory ground is adorned with scattered pink flowers and scrolling foliage.

Framed by a main border of blue Greek-key motifs alternating with pink and ivory floral rosettes, with rosettes at the corners, set between ivory bands and narrow indigo lines.

The field displays a lengthwise colour variation across three shades: a rich midnight blue on the left, a medium blue in the centre, and a slightly lighter band on the right. This abrash, a variation resulting from the use of successive dye batches and accentuated by past exposure to light, is characteristic of hand-dyed wool and a hallmark of traditional craftsmanship.

Condition: very good overall condition. Even, consistent pile, a clearly defined design, and indigo blue that retains its depth. No signs of restoration. The end fringes are worn and shortened. The pink tones have faded on the surface but remain vivid on the reverse, a patina typical of wool exposed to light over many years. Stable dyes: the pink does not bleed when rubbed with a damp cloth. These changes are consistent with the natural wear of an antique rug and do not detract from the overall clarity of the design. No work is required before use, although localised fringe repairs may be undertaken at the buyer’s discretion.
The rug is sound, free from moths and fleas, cleaned and treated, and ready to be unrolled and placed. It lies perfectly flat.
