Pair Of Candlesticks With Cherub Torch-bearers, Gilt Bronze And Marble, Late 19th Century
Pair of candlesticks with cherubs as torch-bearers, gilt bronze and marble, Louis XVI style, late 19th century, putti candlesticks
Pair of gilt bronze candlesticks on marble bases, Louis XVI style, late 19th century, probably French work.
Each stem is formed by a standing cherub, naked, a drapery knotted at the hips, both arms raised to support the candle cup on its head. Full, supple modelling, curly hair, lowered face, feet set firmly flat. The two figures are not identical: they answer each other, one turning its head slightly towards the other, which gives the pair its movement once the candlesticks are placed side by side.
Above, a crown of broadly spreading acanthus leaves forming the drip pan, then the fluted candle cup topped with a row of gadroons — the whole evoking a Corinthian capital set on the child's head. Crisp chasing, well-detached foliage, fine edges.
Square bases of veined marble slabs applied onto a stone core, encircled by a row of bronze beads and each resting on four gilt bronze toupie feet. The veining differs from one base to the other, pale pink and grey on one, redder and brecciated on the other: two natural pieces, matched without being identical twins.
Original gilding with a lovely warm patina, slightly nuanced on the reliefs, darker on the foliage and crowns. Objects of use, designed for candles and perfectly functional as they are: a laid table, a mantelpiece, a console, a bedside table or a desk. Conversion into lamps would require drilling and is not recommended here.
Very good overall condition, the pieces straight, stable and sturdy, the bronzes firmly fixed to their bases. Small signs of use and light wear to the gilding on the edges and drip pans, consistent with age. A small hole visible behind one of the two heads, probably a casting vent. A discreet trace of glue on the row of beads of one of the bases. Nothing requiring intervention: the pair can be displayed and used as it is.
