Pair Of Rush-seat Chairs - Georges Robert, France Circa 1950, Brutalist Design

Artist: Georges Robert

Pair of rush-seat chairs, Georges Robert, France circa 1950, brutalist, vintage, design

Pair of dining chairs, France, 1950s, attributed to Georges Robert. Georges Robert remains associated with rustic-spirited French post-war furniture, sturdy seats in stained wood and rush, halfway between provincial furniture and chalet furniture — a vein that has become highly sought after for its almost brutalist character.

Hardwood stained dark brown, with a deep, warm patina and the grain of the wood showing through the stain. One-piece back uprights, turned as thick cylinders and topped with a slight dome; front legs of the same section, rounded at the foot. Backrest with three evenly spaced curved rails. Low H-stretcher, pegged joints, corner blocks fitted under the seat rail: a carpenter's construction, honest and sturdy.

Hand-woven rush seats, the rush plaited in four quarters radiating towards a central star, in a lovely honey tone that contrasts with the brown of the frames. The weave is tight, even and still firm to the touch.

Originally intended for dining, they find their place around a farmhouse table, an oak top or a kitchen table; they also work very well as an occasional pair, on either side of a console, in an entrance hall, a bedroom or a study. They have enough presence to be used separately.

Very good condition. Wear patina on the frames, superficial scratches, a few broken strands of rush at the central crossing, visible only when the chair is turned over and with no effect on the strength of the seat. Sound wood, firm joints, no wobble: both chairs can be used as they are.
