Large French Napoleon III Period Hall Lantern, 19th Century, Louis XVI Style Chased Bronze
Monumental bronze hall lantern in the Louis XVI style. A cylindrical model in finely chased bronze.
French work of the 19th century, Napoleon III period (circa 1860-1880), with a richly chased mount of passementerie, beading, ribbons, bows, acanthus and pine cones, retaining its original glass panes and a fine patina with warm golden-brown highlights. Standing 110 cm high, it belongs among the large antique light fittings made for châteaux and hôtels particuliers.
An antique light originally designed for gas lighting, then converted to electricity during the 20th century. The central cylindrical shaft, a remnant of the original gas supply pipe, has been skilfully reused to carry the electrical wiring. The upper mount consists of four curved console arms joining the cylindrical body, surmounted by a crown of acanthus leaves concealing the suspension ring.
Rich neoclassical ornamentation worked in the round and in high relief. Decoration imitating passementerie, with draped cords holding tassels and pompoms. Ribbon bows, friezes of beading on the upper and lower bands, and acanthus leaves. The tops and bases of the uprights are punctuated by finials and pine-cone drops.
A bronze structure of remarkable quality of execution. Original patina in gunmetal, golden-brown and coppery tones, bringing out the depth of the chasing. Protected by four large curved glass panes around the circumference and a flat circular pane forming the base. Access to the lighting chamber through a curved side door held by a working mechanical latch. Central four-light fitting with upward-facing lights, fitted with standard bayonet sockets (B22).
Very good condition for a piece of this scale. A few minor losses to the circular bead friezes (visible in the photographs). A stabilised crack at the lower corner of one of the curved panes, barely noticeable once hung. Faint residual traces of old paint. Old electrical wiring, in working order.
