Glazed Earthenware "virgin And Child" – Ligron, 18th Century
Welcome to my shop.
A charming 18th-century statuette of the Virgin and Child, from the Ligron pottery center, made of light terracotta and covered with a glossy yellow-brown glaze, accented with darker brown touches.
Mary holds the Infant Jesus in her left arm. Her long dress falls in folds onto a low, rounded base, decorated with two rows of vertical notches. This compact composition draws on an older tradition of devotional statuettes. The thickness of the glaze softens the details of the faces and clothing, giving this piece its distinctive appearance.
The reverse side is almost flat, largely unglazed, and has a rough finish. A cavity is visible beneath the base.
The statuette has areas where the glaze is missing, particularly on the Child’s head, on the front of Mary’s robe, and along the edges, revealing the light-colored clay. Please refer to the photographs to assess the craftsmanship and condition.
Height: 16.7 cm.
Base width: 5 cm.
A fine example of French religious folk art, suitable for a collection of antique ceramics or devotional objects.
