Jan Verdonk, Immaculate Virgin, Bronze, Gebroeders Van Paridon, Art Deco Sculpture

A rare hollow bronze sculpture depicting the Immaculate Virgin Mary, based on a model by the Dutch sculptor Jan Verdonk (1887–1956). The composition corresponds to the famous model of the Virgin featured in the catalog of Gebroeders Van Paridon in Amsterdam, one of the most important producers of religious art in the Netherlands during the interwar period.

The Virgin is depicted with her hands crossed over her chest, standing on the globe, crushing the serpent—a symbol of victory over evil. The slender proportions, elegant drapery, and serene expression perfectly reflect Jan Verdonk’s style, influenced by Art Deco and the Amsterdam School.

This piece is a high-quality hollow bronze casting featuring a beautiful original dark brown antique patina. On the reverse, faint traces remain of a three-digit model number cast into the bronze, which is unfortunately now illegible. No foundry mark is visible.

The bronze versions of Jan Verdonk’s creations are significantly rarer than the much more common Paridur examples and appear only very rarely on the art market.

The sculpture is in excellent condition, showing only slight wear consistent with its age.
