Antique Engraved Brass Snuffbox — Jesus, Jairus’s Daughter, And The Twelve Apostles
Welcome to my shop.
An antique tobacco box with an elongated shape and rounded ends, made of brass and richly decorated with engraved religious scenes and old inscriptions in Dutch.
On one side, Jesus is depicted alongside a reclining female figure. This scene is interpreted as the resurrection of Jairus’s daughter, whom Jesus brings back to life with his word. Among the inscriptions, “Jesus” stands out, along with the fragments “Door de kracht” and “zijn woorden,” meaning “By the power” and “his words,” respectively. The other side also features a religious scene, the exact subject of which remains to be identified.
The twelve apostles are depicted on the two long sides, six on each side, accompanied by their engraved names. The figures, architectural elements, and calligraphic inscriptions give this box a particularly decorative character.
The box has a beautiful antique patina, signs of use, small dents, and wear on the engravings. Reinforcements have been added to the interior, clearly visible in the two detailed photographs. The central pin of the hinge is broken at both ends. The hinge has a slight amount of play on the left side; however, the lid closes properly.
Dimensions: length 16.8 cm, width 5.8 cm, height 3.3 cm.
Weight: 168 grams.
An antique snuff box full of character, perfect for enthusiasts of tobacco history, religious art, and engraved brass.
