French Art Nouveau Hand Mirror In Carved Wood, Signed “gaigneux,” Circa 1895–1910
An elegant French hand mirror from the Art Nouveau period, finely hand-carved from a single piece of wood. It is richly decorated with blooming roses, flower buds, and foliage in high relief. The supple, organic lines and the quality of the carving are characteristic of French Art Nouveau from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The mirror has retained its original glass as well as its wooden back panel. The handle bears an engraved signature, provisionally read as “Gaigneux.” The artist has not yet been identified, but this signature, combined with the quality of the craftsmanship, attests to the work of a particularly skilled artisan or small workshop.
The piece is in very fine original condition. The glass is antique and shows only slight signs of wear and aging normal for an object over a century old. A small superficial scratch is visible on the front. The wood features a magnificent antique patina that perfectly highlights the delicacy of the carving.
A rare and refined decorative piece, ideal for a collection of Art Nouveau, French decorative arts, or antique bathroom accessories. Thanks to its high-quality craftsmanship and signature, this mirror stands out distinctly from the more common models of that era.
