Solid Silver Sugar Caster – William Devenport – Birmingham, 1934

An elegant and imposing English Silver Sugar Caster / shaker in solid silver, crafted by the Birmingham silversmith William Devenport. It was hallmarked in Birmingham and bears the date letter “K,” corresponding to the year 1934.

This octagonal shaker is crafted in the Neo-Georgian style. Its stepped base supports a faceted body that extends into a tall, slightly flared neck. The removable, domed lid is beautifully openworked with stylized floral and foliage motifs. It is topped with a handle shaped like a floral bud.

The body and lid bear the following English hallmarks:

• Silversmith’s mark W.D. for William Devenport
• Birmingham Assay Office anchor
• Passing lion guaranteeing sterling silver at 925/1000
• Date letter K for 1934

Standing 23 cm tall and weighing 246 grams, this is a generously sized piece, both imposing and decorative.

The sugar shaker is in good vintage condition. It shows normal signs of age and use, including slight surface scratches and a few minor imperfections. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they are an integral part of the description.
