Solid Silver Vase Edinburgh 1764 - James Mcknight - 1264g

Exceptional Georgian sterling silver covered vase / Loving Cup with gadroon decoration, Scotland, 1764.

Description:
Exceptional and rare ceremonial vase (also known as a Loving Cup or presentation cup) with two handles in sterling silver (.925). This masterpiece was made in Edinburgh, Scotland, between 1764 and 1765, at the height of the Scottish Enlightenment.

With workmanship worthy of the finest goldsmiths' collections, this vase features sumptuous early neoclassical decoration. The lower part of the body and the circular pedestal are adorned with twisted gadroons embossed and chased by hand, offering magnificent plays of light on the silver. The imposing double-scroll handles are magnified by leafy thumb rests (stylized acanthus leaves) and flared attachments of great finesse, ensuring a grip that is both sturdy and elegant.

Exemplary clarity and rarity of hallmarking:
The upper lip features a complete and perfectly legible suite of five period hallmarks, guaranteeing absolute authenticity and historical traceability:

Master hallmark: JMc (with superscript 'c') for the famous silversmith James McKnight (admitted master to the guild in 1749).
City mark: The three-towered castle, official mark of the city of Edinburgh.
Title mark: The thistle, a symbol of purity guaranteeing the standard of Scottish sterling silver (.925).
Date letter: The lower-case j in its period escutcheon, corresponding precisely to the year of casting 1764-1765.
Tester's hallmark (Deacon): The mark of the dean of the guild, attributable to master assayer Patrick Robertson (active 1764-1766), which scientifically validates the dating.

With a substantial weight of 1264 grams and a height of 26 cm, this prestigious vase has undergone no major alterations or restoration. It has retained a superb original patina that will appeal to international collectors of fine 18th-century British and European silverware.
