19th-century Bas-relief, Religious, Renaissance Style
Two religious bas-reliefs in patinated and gilded plaster — 19th century
A set of two 19th-century bas-reliefs in patinated and gilded plaster, mounted together in a dark wooden frame.
The left panel depicts the Adoration of the Shepherds: the Virgin and Child are surrounded by shepherds, beneath a group of angels, set against a backdrop of ancient architecture.
The right panel depicts the Lamentation of Christ, with the figures gathered around his body at the foot of Calvary. The ladder and the two thieves are shown in the background.
Based on Italian Renaissance models, these compositions feature numerous figures and dynamic drapery.
Dark patina accented with gilding. Surface wear, scuffing, and areas where the gilding is missing are visible in the photographs.
