Religious Painting - Oil On Canvas - Italy - 19th Century
Artist: Dlg De Fra Angelico
19th Century School – In the style of Fra Angelico, Lamentation over the Dead Christ – Oil on canvas with a gold ground. An important 19th-century religious painting depicting the Lamentation over the Dead Christ, inspired by the Italian Quattrocento pictorial tradition and particularly the aesthetics of Fra Angelico. The scene shows Jesus Christ being taken down from the cross, surrounded by sacred figures who have come to mourn his death: Mary, absorbed in grief; John the Apostle supporting Christ's body; and Mary Magdalene kneeling in prayer. The cross appears in the background, recalling the moment immediately following the crucifixion. The composition, of great spiritual restraint, is structured in an arched form. The entirely gold leaf background evokes Italian medieval altarpieces and panels. The finely drawn halos and the stylized vegetal decoration in the upper spandrels recall Gothic illuminations and the decorative panels of the Italian primitives. The work testifies to the revival of religious art in the 19th century, when many painters drew inspiration from the purity and fervor of Quattrocento masters such as Fra Angelico. The delicate treatment of the faces, the gentleness of the expressions, and the harmonious palette lend the work an atmosphere of meditation and contemplation. Oil on canvas with a gold ground, mounted on a stretcher. Beautiful natural craquelure attests to the painting's age. Period: 19th century. Technique: Oil on canvas with a gold ground. Subject: Religious scene – Lamentation of Christ. Condition: Pierced at the knee, defects visible in the photos. A decorative and spiritual work in the tradition of Neo-Medieval painting and the revival of sacred art in the 19th century.
