Born in Castelfranco di Sotto in 1839, this painter began his artistic career thanks to a municipal grant that allowed him to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence under the guidance of illustrious masters such as Pietro Benvenuti and Giuseppe Bezzuoli. His training was rich and varied, leading him to study in Rome with Tommaso Minardi and to frequent the innovative circle of the Macchiaioli in Florence, in addition to spending a significant period in Venice. The decisive turning point in his career came in the mid-1850s when, together with his brother Puccio, he received the important commission from patron Francis Joseph Sloane to decorate the Medici Villa in Careggi with historical subjects linked to the Medici family. The great success of this work opened the doors to high society for him and secured him a solid critical reputation, leading him to obtain prestigious professorships in painting, first in Florence and then at the Academy of Bologna.
