The work depicts Saint John the Baptist in full figure during a moment of meditation in the desert, depicted with understated elegance, seated in his typical contemplative pose with his index finger pointing toward the sky, while his gaze turns toward the viewer, and with one hand holding the traditional cross-shaped staff, alluding to Christ’s sacrifice on the cross.
Characterized by a simplicity that highlights the subject’s spiritual purity, the saint is draped in a simple, bright red cloak, symbolizing his renunciation of material things and his connection to the divine realm, while the barren and arid landscape surrounding him represents solitude and sacrifice—central elements in the saint’s life.
The depiction conveys a profound spirituality, typical of the iconographic canons of the 16th century, and can be attributed to a painter active in that century—or, at the very latest, at the beginning of the next—close to Marcello Venusti (1510–1579), a painter of Lombard origin who spent most of his prolific career in Rome; his workshop received numerous commissions for works with similar subjects.
Venusti arrived in the Eternal City around 1545, thanks to the support of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, and worked first on Perin del Vaga’s projects at Castel Sant’Angelo and later alongside Michelangelo in the Pauline Chapel in the Vatican.
This work is a smaller-scale version, created for domestic devotion, of the altarpiece commissioned from Marcello Venusti for the church of Santa Caterina dei Funari in Rome.

The work is sold complete with a certificate of authenticity and a descriptive iconographic sheet.
