Mother-of-pearl Seashell Depicting A Religious Scene
Carved mother-of-pearl shell with religious motifs—probably from Jerusalem
Carved and engraved mother-of-pearl shell depicting four religious scenes arranged in medallions around a central cruciform motif.
The upper section depicts the Crucifixion, with Christ on the cross surmounted by the inscription “INRI.” The other scenes are surrounded by a design of finely engraved foliage. The mother-of-pearl has beautiful iridescent sheen, while the reverse side retains the shell’s natural appearance.
Probably a pilgrimage souvenir from Jerusalem or the Holy Land.
Please note: a small chip on the edge, visible in the close-up photograph, as well as some signs of wear.
