Lactating Virgin, 16th Century, Polychrome Wood
Polychrome Wooden Sculpture of the Nursing Virgin – Spain, 16th century
An important 16th-century Spanish religious sculpture depicting the Virgin nursing the Infant Jesus, an iconographic motif known as the Virgo Lactans or Virgin of Milk.
The Virgin, standing and draped in a long cloak with deeply carved folds, tenderly cradles the Child in her arms. The expressive faces are brought to life by glass eyes. The piece retains its original polychrome paintwork in shades of green, ochre, and brown.
Polychrome wooden sculpture resting on a molded octagonal base.
Condition consistent with its age: significant wear and loss of polychrome, craquelure, cracks, and small visible chips. The piece remains structurally sound and exhibits a very beautiful sense of authenticity.
