French First Empire Infantry Officer's Gorget
First French Empire: officer’s Gorget or the 61st Line Infantry Regiment. This brass piece is adorned with a mounted silver eagle, set within a wreath of palm leaves and surmounting a central shield engraved with the number “61.” Although the reverse side reveals that some of the fasteners securing the eagle are missing, the piece remains firmly assembled and is, on the whole, in very good condition.
Note –The 61st Line Infantry Regiment was a seasoned unit that had already fought in the Revolutionary Wars before joining Napoleon’s Grande Armée in 1803. During the Empire, it distinguished itself with an impressive military record, suffering heavy casualties and participating in many of Napoleon’s major campaigns, such as:
