A large and beautiful sculpture from the Art Deco period 1920–1930 depicting a nude woman making a gesture as if she were washing her hair, as if she were taking a bath or a shower....The sculpture is signed on the lower back, but a chip in the wood prevents the signature from being read in its entirety / see photo details: In all likelihood, it is of Malagasy origin, as—barring any error—the first letters of the name are "Ram," which often corresponds to the vast majority of surnames found in Madagascar...
Note: One of the appeals of this sculpture is its simultaneously modern and exotic character, as if it offered us a subtle blend ofBlack Africa and Paul Gauguin:  It is a carved wooden work that seems to fit squarely within the tradition of Madagascan colonial art of the 1920s and 1930s, a period when several Malagasy sculptors adopted Western artistic conventions: for example, the famous French sculptor Anna Quinquaud, who spent time in Madagascar training several students there...
