Large Orientalist Sculpture 1900 - Polychrome Terracotta - Young Woman Carrying Water
Large and beautiful polychrome terracotta Orientalist sculpture, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, depicting a young Oriental woman carrying water. The work is numbered and signed with the monogram "JM3758" inside the terracotta. It also bears the label of a former shop in Nice, "E. JAUME, Avenue de la Gare." This must have been a sort of general store, as the shop also sold art bronzes, luxury leather goods, and toys. Note: this work falls squarely within the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods (approximately 1890 to 1930) and was certainly influenced by the renowned Friedrich Goldscheider (1845-1897), a celebrated artist who helped popularize this type of sculpture, highly decorative and prized by collectors.
