Large & beautiful 18th-century biblical canvas depictingthe temptation of St. Anthony, a famous hermit who took refuge in a cave in the desert, but was tempted by the devil.cave in the desert, but whom the devil tried to test: according to the various various legends, the devil tried to frighten him, sometimes withferocious animals, or, as in the painting shown here, by offering him theoffering him the "services" of a young, pretty woman, which the religious refused...
Note:the work offered here is unsigned, but its fine quality suggests an excellent painter, probably an artist of the'French school or a northern school: it does indeed possess some aspects reminiscent of the Flemish manner...
