"Great Impressionist 1950...jerusalem, Old City & Jewish Quarter...signed Cyrillic?"
A large and beautiful Impressionist painting dating from the 1950s-1960s depicting a luminous view of a bustling alley in the Old City of Jerusalem, Israel. One of the figures seated on a cart wears a Hebrew headdress, as does the one in the background, suggesting that the scene is likely set in the Jewish Quarter. The painting is signed in Cyrillic script in the lower right corner and has other annotations in Cyrillic and French on the reverse of the stretcher, including "Jerusalem Old City." Research would be needed to determine if the artist was Ukrainian or Russian, many of whom emigrated to Israel after World War II. Aside from the question of attribution, this painting is of twofold interest: firstly, its high technical and artistic quality suggests the presence of an excellent artist; and secondly, from a historical perspective, it reflects the career of an artist (whose family and (He himself) certainly fled the pogroms and other persecutions that raged in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century, and which led many Jews to settle in Israel... - some minor paint losses, quite basic, to correct - Canvas size: 63 cm x 48 cm Frame: 75 cm x 59 cm - ask me for other photos if needed -
