Large Greek Orthodox Icon, 19th Century - Byzantine Painting - Saint Helena & Saint Constantine
A remarkable Greek Orthodox icon, presumably dating from the 19th century, depicting Emperor Saint Constantine and his Mother Saint Helena, two emblematic figures of Byzantine Christianity and the Eastern churches: in the year 313, Saint Constantine, Roman emperor, ended the persecutions against the Church of Christ, according to the Edict of Milan. Upon assuming power, Constantine immediately addressed the problems of the Church, convinced that he was divinely entrusted with a mission as leader of the Christian people. Helena, Constantine's mother, was tasked with building magnificent basilicas in Bethlehem and Jerusalem at sacred sites such as the Nativity, Resurrection, and Ascension of Jesus Christ. Note that small wormholes are visible here and there; these have been treated, but the future owner could easily repeat the treatment. Panel dimensions (wood): 41 cm x 31.5 cm - thickness: 2 cm - please ask for more photos if needed.
