François Simon 1818-1896 - Large Barbizon Canvas - View Of A Countryside With A Cow & Her Calf
Artist: Simon François (1818-1896)
Large and beautiful 19th-century painting executed in the pure style of the animal painters of the Barbizon school, depicting a rural landscape with a cow and her calf in a meadow... The work is signed by the painter Simon François (1818-1896), an excellent artist born in Marseille, to whom the Bénézit dictionary devotes a chapter: he was notably a student of the famous Émile Loubon and debuted at the Salon of 1853, also participating in the Universal Exhibition of 1855... his works are preserved in several museums, including those of; Pontoise, Saint-Étienne, and Strasbourg... Note: he's the kind of artist whose work can be collected "without breaking the bank" because his paintings have remained quite affordable compared to those of painters of his generation: Gustave Courbet (1819-1877), Théodore Rousseau (1812-1867), and Jean-François Millet (1814-1875), to name just the most famous. The record auction price for a painting by Simon François is €7,500 (in 2004 at Aguttes). Apart from this record, prices vary depending on the size and quality of the paintings, but also on current demand. Among the results of recent years, there have been about twenty auctions between €500 and €3,800 (Source: Art-Price). Note some craquelure and old overpainting (clichéd details) without any real impact on the quality of the work.
