Large 20th Century Bronze Sculpture - African Art - Powerful Yoruba Warrior From The Edo Ethnicity Of Benin
Artist: Art Africain
Large and powerful 20th-century African folk art bronze sculpture depicting a warrior from Benin, belonging to the Yoruba ethnic group of the Edo people. The origin and production of Benin bronze sculptures date back to the 16th to 18th centuries, and they served as ceremonial objects in the palaces of nobles and other royal dynasties (Oba) that succeeded one another over the centuries. At the end of the 19th century, many of these sculptures were looted by colonizers and British military personnel, and a large number are now on display at the British Museum and in various European museums. Note: From the 20th century onwards, African artists revived the ancestral bronze technique to preserve the tradition and keep alive the image and myth of the Benin warrior. This gave rise to a folk art of very high decorative quality, and the sculpture offered here is a magnificent example. Note in particular the numerous symbols, the fine chiseling present throughout, and the variations in patina that give it a great deal of character. Strength...today, whether displayed in private collections or as a symbol of power in African village chiefdoms, they often reflect a rather exceptional, mysterious character...Objectively, it's great art and a very beautiful collector's item! Note some traces of so-called "indigenous" repairs, and here and there areas of "greenish" color, which are a sign of the beginning of aging of the bronze: we can reasonably place the creation of this sculpture in the second half of the 20th century, between 1950 and 1970... (it comes from a collection in Belgium...)
