Large and beautiful Orientalist watercolor, from the late 19th century or around 1900, which represents a landscape of Algeria with a water carrier who appears to be a Kabyle woman based on her clothing and the typically Berber amphora...The work is signed by the famous painter Édouard Herzig (1860-1926) to whom the Bénézit devotes a chapter and whose biography can be read on the Wikipedia site: in 1883, aged 23, his taste for independence and adventure led him to embark from Marseille for Algeria. He settled in Kabylia to become a court clerk in Tizi Ouzou... he then moved to Algiers and attended the School of Fine Arts... his work was unanimously acclaimed and was presented at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris in 1925 (Algerian Pavilion)... it should be noted that he was the father of Fernande Herzig and Yvonne Kleiss-Herzig, two equally renowned painters... Values & Auctions: the value of his watercolors varies from a few hundred to several thousand euros, including a record of 3,600 euros achieved in 2006 for a watercolor entitled "Fountain near the Mosque," which surpassed his previous record of 3,200 euros for a watercolor entitled "Orange Seller in the Kasbah"... in addition to these record prices, his works have achieved more than twenty other notable results.
