"Follower Of Rubens 17th Century...large Canvas...holy Family With Saint Elizabeth & John The Baptist"
Large biblical canvas from the 17th century which represents a Holy Family with the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus, in the company of Saint Elizabeth and Saint John the Baptist Child... The painting is not signed but a thorough research has revealed that the author was inspired by an engraving by Rubens which is taken from one of his paintings of 1618 / see photo: throughout his career, Rubens' workshop welcomed more than a hundred students, some of whom were his assistants who produced replicas and variants of his paintings... this contributed to confusing the issues, which explains the complex classification of his works: follower, in the manner, circle, attributed, school, workshop, etc... note: note that the author of the canvas proposed here followed fairly faithfully the engraving which is inverted compared to the original canvas: on the other hand, he completely changed the chromatism compared to the original painting... Only a painter with solid experience is capable of a "creation" of this quality... Ultimately and at this stage, serious investigations would be necessary to discover its author and attempt to obtain attribution... - examination with a Wood lamp shows some old repaintings, without real consequences on the quality of the work - Canvas size: 124 cm x 98 cm - ask me for other photos if necessary -
