"Antoinette Marie Flury-herard 19th-20th Century - Large Terracotta - The Woman Of Arles"
Large and charming terracotta sculpture dated 1914, depicting a bust portrait of an elderly Provençal woman whose headdress is quite typical of an Arlesian woman. The work is signed on the reverse by Antoinette-Marie Flury-Herard (19th-20th century), an artist about whom little is known and who has certainly fallen into oblivion, like many female artists of that era. Note: this is a very pleasing sculpture, as the expression of this old woman conveys a mischievous and intelligent smile, as if she were amused by the situation. This character could have stepped straight out of a novel by Alphonse Daudet or even Marcel Pagnol, for those who remember "Grafignette" in the novel "Manon des Sources." There is some wear and tear, and a few small chips (impacts on the base) without any real impact on the quality of the work.
