Circle Of Giambattista Piazzetta (venice 1683 - Venice 1754) - Six Half-length Apostles.
Artist: Entourage De Giambattista Piazzetta (venise 1683 - Venise 1754)
Circle of Giambattista Piazzetta (Venice 1683 - Venice 1754) - Six Half-Length Apostles.
62.5 x 52.5 cm (unframed) - 72.5 x 62.5 cm (framed).
Group of six oils on canvas, in contemporary 18th-century carved and gilded wooden frames.
The series is based on inventions by Giambattista Piazzetta (Venice 1683 - Venice 1754), later engraved by Marco Alvise Pitteri (Venice 1702 - Venice 1786).
The series depicts six half-length Apostles against a dark background. Proceeding from the upper left: Saint John the Evangelist, writing with a quill pen, Saint James the Greater, in meditation, Saint Philip, holding the staff of his martyrdom, Saint Thomas, his gaze turned upward, Saint Andrew, with his cross, and Saint James the Lesser, in a pensive attitude.
The paintings fall squarely within the Piazzettesque orbit, reflecting the master's characteristic chiaroscuro approach: figures emerging from darkness with bold contrasts of light and shadow, vigorous rendering of aged faces and hands, and the inner tension that defines Piazzetta's apostle series and those of his circle. The direct reference to the engravings of Marco Alvise Pitteri — a faithful graphic interpreter of Piazzetta's work — places the series within the context of Venetian painting of the first half of the 18th century, when such subjects circulated widely in both graphic and painted form.
Condition report: Five canvases are unlined originals; one has been relined. The painted surfaces are in good overall condition, with traces of age and wear. The paintings are presented in their original 18th-century frames.
