Venetian Painter (19th Century) - View Of Padua From Porta Liviana, Featuring The Basilica Of Saint Anthony

Artist: Peintre Vénitien (xixe Siècle)

Venetian painter (19th century) - View of Padua from Porta Liviana with the Basilica of Saint Anthony in the background.

37.5 x 48.5 cm (unframed) - 50.5 x 60 cm (framed).

Oil on canvas, in a carved wooden frame.

The painting depicts a view of Padua dominated by the profile of the Basilica of Sant'Antonio, the great Franciscan complex erected from the 13th century in honour of the Portuguese saint, among the most venerated in Christendom. The unmistakable Byzantine domes and bell towers of the Basilica emerge clearly in the background, framed within a landscape composition alternating tree masses and urban architecture. To the right stands Porta Liviana, a medieval defensive tower once part of the city's wall system. The foreground is animated by figures of peasants engaged in agricultural work, a donkey-drawn cart, and a group of children with a dog — staffage figures recalling the vedutistic repertoire of the Veneto region in the 18th-century tradition. The execution reveals a skilled hand in the atmospheric rendering of the landscape, with a luminous touch and confident command of perspectival depth.
