Venetian Painter (late 19th – Early 20th Century) – Venice, View Of St. Mark’s Square.
Venetian painter (late 19th – early 20th century) – Venice, view of St. Mark’s Square with the Basilica and the Bell Tower.
32 x 24 cm (unframed) – 40 x 32 cm (framed).
Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame.
The painting depicts St. Mark’s Square animated by a few passersby and pigeons, with St. Mark’s Basilica in the foreground and the Bell Tower rising on the right. The brushwork, rapid and with an Impressionist touch, is typical of Venetian art produced between the 19th and 20th centuries, aimed at an audience of travelers and collectors. The small figures in the foreground evoke the typical repertoire of the Venetian veduta tradition.
