"14 Monumental 19th Century Biblical Paintings...spectacular Complete Way Of The Cross"
Monumental & spectacular suite of 14 biblical canvases from the 19th century, which correspond to the fourteen stations of the cross which evoke the last moments of Christ's life on earth: according to the Bible, this tragic episode begins with the condemnation of Jesus by "Pontius Pilate" which will be followed by his journey as a tortured man where Christ will have to carry his cross until his crucifixion and his burial ... note: the canvases do not seem to be signed but their beautiful quality suggests the presence of an excellent French artist who is part of the continuity of the neoclassicism movement of Jean-Auguste Dominiquaise Ingres and Hippolyte Flandrin: indeed, these 14 paintings probably date from 1820-1840, a period when there was a revival of religious painting in France ... Many artists were then inspired by the old masters, such as Raphael or Nicolas Poussin, which explains why we find here this rather specific chromatism and a theatricalization foreground ...- note that on the 14 paintings, there are here and there gaps and snags, in particular 4 or 5 canvases which will have to undergo a curative restoration to refix the pictorial layer: it is a fairly substantial but rather basic work to carry out for a professional restorer / see details of the photos -Canvas size (each): 162 cm x 117 cm - ask me for other photos if necessary -Delivery-Shipping: these 14 paintings can be shipped by carrier whose cost is different depending on the distance..
