At the crossroads of the Persian and Caucasian worlds, Karadagh rugs speak a language all their own.
Before I begin my description, I’d like to first mention the extreme fineness of the knotted weave. The rug is surprisingly light given its size, and the piece is supple.

The composition is dense, almost architectural, featuring a profusion of geometric motifs and a deep color palette that time has beautifully aged.

The central field is built around a particularly rhythmic vertical sequence of large polygonal motifs and rectangular cartouches. Rhombuses, star-shaped forms, hooks, and small stylized elements complete the design. Everything repeats without ever being perfectly identical: slight variations in design and proportions give the composition that sense of freedom characteristic of older works.

The borders are particularly rich. Several motifs follow one another, ranging from small geometric and floral shapes to wide bands of midnight blue crisscrossed with angular patterns. The ivory accents highlight this architectural structure and add depth to a perfectly executed composition.

And then there are the colors. Madder red, brick red, dusty pink, indigo blue, midnight blue, deep brown, ivory, with a few touches of ochre and luminous green.
Time has slightly faded certain areas of the central field, creating beautiful lighter sections and a particularly vibrant patina. The indigo hues, deeper in the borders, perfectly frame the reds and enhance their warmth.

Originating from Karadagh, in Iranian Azerbaijan in northwestern Persia, this rug perfectly illustrates the aesthetic exchanges between Persia and the neighboring Caucasus. A piece whose richness is first apparent as a whole, before the eye gradually loses itself in the multitude of its motifs.
