Afghan Rug, 100 X 192 Cm, Wool On Wool, Hand-knotted In Afghanistan Around 1970, In Perfect Condition
Artist: Art D'afghanistan
Artist: Afghans
Hand-knotted wool-on-wool Afghan rug, circa 1970.
This piece measures 100 cm wide by 192 cm long and is in superb condition.
Made of red and black wool throughout, with hints of white and curry yellow.
This rug is decorated with small guls—medallions commonly found on Central Asian rugs—alternating here with small crosses.
# Beautiful, deep, high-quality wool.
# Note the intricate design of the borders.
Afghan handicrafts are always very well made.
In other regions, nomadic rugs are often loosely knotted and have long pile.
Unlike Afghan or Turkmen rugs, which feature dense, tight knots due to the Persian knot, velvet-like strands, and goat hair or sheep’s wool—soft and lustrous—
However, goat hair is more commonly used for the warp and weft.
These rugs have a masculine feel and have always been highly prized.
They have been used since the 19th century to decorate the offices of businessmen.
These majestic carpets are undoubtedly the finest in Central Asia and are the work of Afghan tribes.
The same style of knotting and design is found in neighboring carpets from Turkmenistan made by the Tekke tribe, generally called “Bukhara-Tekke”—a misnomer.
Historically, these tribes produced smaller rugs due to the distance separating them from Central Asia and foreign markets.
This rug is in perfect condition: pile, fringes, and selvages.
Finish: fringes at one end knotted in the kilim style, followed by additional fringes.
Dimensions: Width: 100 cm (39") x Length: 192 cm (75")
This rug has been professionally cleaned.
