Double Reliquary Bust of Saints Fabian and Sebastian - Italy - 17th century
This polychrome and gilded reliquary, carved in the round from wood, isimpressive, to say the least.
In addition to its age and the finesse of its craftsmanship, itfeatures a design that, if not unique, is extremely rare: the pairing oftwo busts side by side.
United for eternity, here are Saint Sebastianand Saint Fabian, both strikingly expressive and solemn. Saint Fabian, a pope and martyr whose palm he bears, was a contemporary ofSebastian.
Both died as martyrs during the great persecution ofDiocletian. The former in 288 and the latter in 250. The attribute of the palm, along with their geographical and temporal proximity, leads usto believe that this is indeed Saint Fabian. Both are, in fact,celebrated on the same day, namely January 20.
Beneath the busts, two reliquary niches are set into theterrace, in the center of which is a coat of arms likely depicting the donorof this exceptional piece.

The dimensions are substantial, measuring 75 cm in height, 99 cm inlength, and 39 cm in depth.
The piece retains traces of its liturgical use and itsoriginal polychromy, with a patina attesting to its age.Good condition—restored
