Wooden Panel With Allegorical Decoration
An oak panel likely from the central section of a Norman chest. This 17th-century panel was carved from two planks. The tongues along the edges allowed it to be slid into grooves provided for that purpose on the chest’s frame. This design allowed the wood to withstand seasonal climate changes without splitting. The scene depicts a young woman looking at herself in a mirror while being watched by a bird—an allegory of vanity. The carving is in fairly high relief and features floral motifs.
