This work of art is a finely carved wooden sculpture depicting St. John the Baptist, dating from 17th-century Italy (the “Seicento”).
St. John the Baptist is traditionally depicted wearing a garment made of camel skin and a cloak. The saint is depicted in the classic gesture of pointing upward with the index finger of his raised right hand (a symbol of his role as the forerunner who announces the coming of Christ), while his left hand holds the edges of the drapery.
